This is an 'alternate reality' sort of plot, however, all characters retain the same personality traits, the same goals and names. The only difference is the plot that links them all...
The Past
The war between Shinra and Wutai lasted for just a few months. Wutai was beaten into near extinction, and finally admitted defeat, however, the Red-Hoshu clan fled, and started their own section of highly fanatic, highly trained soldiers - and far from the Wutai way of life, they began randomly attacking Shinra positions, sometimes killing innocents.
Meanwhile, back in Shinra Tower, the verbal fights of the two Scientists (Hojo and Hollander) were now in darker areas. Both men were making wild accusations, calling the other an abomination to the scientific world. Hojo was supposedly creating monsters, while Hollander was supposedly cloning an army for himself. This bitter war of words went on for some time until Hollander planted a small sample of advanced Mako in Hojo's experiments. One experiment inparticular reacted badly. 'Project-H' which was originally designed to be an injectable regenerative agent, began to react unfavorably, and became an environmental degenerative. It dissolved the container in which it was being held, and began eating its way through the walls, floor and ultimately the piping that ran through the building. The building was filled with gas, and the mixture of Mako, Materia.
The evacuated workers watched from below, as a fireball blew massive chunks of the southside out, and could hear the metal suspenders creak under the sudden strain, but the tower did not fall. Days after, the tower was deemed safe enough for emergency workers to move in and clean up.
Hojo was taken into Shinra custody, while Hollander fled the city. Hojo admitted that his petty argument was partially to blame, however, he claimed that Hollander was the real perpertrator.
A month or so passed, and Midgar began to settle after the excitement with the Shinra tower. The President spoke to his nation, telling them how the explosion actually led to a new technology, a new way to give hope to the hopeless. It worked, and his people were united once again under the Shinra way. In private, however, a Shinra bounty was issued on Hollander.
Meanwhile, in Wutai, Professor Hollander approched the Red-Hoshu clan. He had heard of the price on his head, and now needed protection, or a way to eliminate Shinra. His bargaining tool was something he had designed, originally to wipe out the enemy of Shinra.
A Mako Bomb. An explosive so powerful, that it could end all wars with one final blast.
They took his plan and set about creating it immediately. Within a month, the Red-Hoshu and assaulted each Mako Refinery in the neighbouring regions, and stolen tons of refined Mako. It was used in Reactors normally, but Hollander began working on highly radiant, highly reactive, highly compressed Mako Units, which would heat up and ultimately explode with devastating power.
It was a cool and clear evening. The streets were slowly emptying, some of the clubs (and other seedier places) were filling. A few birds fluttered above the city. Unbeknownst to Midgar, it had an enemy in its midst. Three Red-Hoshu honor soldiers had pulled a 'foodcart' all the way from the entrance to the pillar holding up Sector 7. Down in the slums the bomb lay in its sleep. The three Wutai men set up the Mako Bomb to explode within an hour. The plan was to kill as many of the people of Midgar.
When the bomb went off, the shockwave alone took out everyone in the slum under Sector 7, and was felt as far away as Costa del Sol. The blast disentegrated the pillar, and blew chunks of the plate all over Midgar. It tore through the entire slum area under Sector 6 and 8. Like dominos, Plate 6 knocked over Sector 5's plate. Both plates collapsed and fell into the Mako flames. People from miles around were able to see the green mushroom shaped cloud reach into the sky.
People lost in the blast is estimated to reach four hundred thousand, as well as handfuls of SOLDIER and President Shinra died in the Mako Explosion...
The Red-Hoshu instantly took credit for the bomb, and Hollander admitted to helping them. Within a day, a new war was waged on the Wutai. There would be no mercy, Shinra's policy was to kill and capture anyone fighting for the Wutai. In response, the Wutai dragged in thousands more soldiers to help defend their homeland despite completely condoning the actions of the Red-Hoshu.
As the Shinra troops began their full assault, Gaia showed it's rage and began the coldest winter for decades. The cold alone made it near impossible to keep up a steady advance, and the Wutai defending army took deeper foot holds in its home country. Within months, the Shinra army was reduced to mere hundreds, and lost nearly all of it's SOLDIER forces to the enemy. Shinra threatened to use it's arsenal of Mako weapons, however the bluff was called when the Red-Hoshu factually told them that the Mako Bomb had destroyed any targeting systems and stockpiles of Super Weapons.
Shinra's troops fell back to the coasts of the Island to prepare evacuation. Through a very steep valley. Sephiroth, the last of the Heroes refused to leave first, and instead valiantly fought until the last man reached the helicopters...
Until this day, the SOLDIER hasn't been seen. He is claimed as KIA, but some think that he managed to flee and is waging his own personal war on the Wutai from within...
Present Day
Midgar is slowly rebuilding its confidence. The Shinra forces are constantly recruiting for what they hope will be the end of Wutai's new grasp on Gaia. Many refugee camps have been set up outside of the City, and thousands of survivors are living on the streets in other sectors. Apparently, there is unrest between the refugees and the original habitants of the other sectors, despite all being from the same city...
Other regions of Gaia are pressuring both sides to stand down, but some are joining one or the other, realizing that there will only be one end to the war...
So, what will you do in Final Fantasy 7; The Lands of Gaia?
